Where a Car Crash Costs Drivers the Most: Our 2026 State Ranking

A serious car crash does more than damage a vehicle, it brings medical bills, insurance costs, lost work time, and out-of-pocket expenses that can follow a family for months. As car accident lawyers who help injured drivers every day, we wanted to measure how heavy that burden is in each state. So we did the research and ranked all 50 of them.

Our October 2026 study found that getting into a car crash in Georgia can cost drivers over 5% of their annual earnings, the most in the country. Car wrecks across the US cause an estimated $340B in direct economic losses, and we identified the 10 states where drivers' budgets take the biggest hit after an accident. Florida, where we live and practice, ranks eighth.

Key Findings at a Glance

  • Georgia drivers spend 5.05% of their annual salary covering car crash costs, the most in the country.
  • Rhode Island drivers pay the most for car accidents in raw dollars, with crash costs of $2,761 per licensed driver.
  • In Louisiana, careless or inattentive driving accounts for 45.8% of the reported factors in fatal crashes, the highest share in our top 10.
  • Florida drivers spend more on auto insurance than drivers in any other state, at $1,864.63 per year, which helps place Florida eighth overall.

How We Measured the Cost of a Car Crash

We analyzed official national datasets for every state. We used crash cost estimates from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and divided them by the number of licensed drivers reported by the Federal Highway Administration. We added average annual auto insurance spending from the NAIC Auto Insurance Database and average health insurance deductibles from the AHRQ Medical Expenditure Panel Survey. To see how much of a paycheck a crash consumes, we compared crash costs with median annual earnings from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

We combined these factors into one Car Crash Cost Index on a 0 to 100 scale. A score of 100 represents the largest financial impact in the country.

State-by-State Breakdown

1. Georgia

Stylized road map of the state of Georgia
  • Crash cost per licensed driver: $2,430
  • Crash cost as a share of median annual earnings: 5.05%
  • Leading fatal crash factor: Failure to yield right-of-way (22.2%)
  • Car Crash Cost Index: 100/100

A major car accident in Georgia is the most expensive in the country relative to income, taking up to 5.05% of the median annual wage. For the average licensed driver, that comes to $2,430. Car insurance costs in Georgia are also among the highest in the country. The worst crashes in the state happen when drivers fail to yield the right-of-way, which is the leading fatal crash factor there. Over 1 in 5 fatal accidents in Georgia happen because of it.

2. Rhode Island

Rhode Island shares the top score with Georgia, but with a different cost profile. Crash costs take up a smaller share of local income (4.86%), yet Rhode Island drivers pay the most in raw dollars, at $2,761 per licensed driver. Careless or inattentive driving is the leading factor in deadly collisions, at 26.1% of reported factors.

3. Connecticut

Connecticut ranks third, with crash costs of $2,318 per licensed driver. In total, the state absorbs $6.1B in car crash losses, about 3.9% of residents' annual wages. Connecticut is the only state in our top 10 where improper lane usage is the leading fatal crash factor, accounting for over one-fifth of reported factors.

4. Louisiana

Louisiana ranks fourth. Because wages are lower there, a crash cost of $1,929 per driver takes 4.2% of the annual budget. Average annual auto insurance spending is also high, at $1.7K, about twice as much as in Maine or Iowa. As in Rhode Island, inattentive driving is the leading cause of fatal crashes, but in Louisiana it accounts for almost half (45.8%) of reported factors.

5. New York

New York rounds out the top five, with crash costs equal to about 3.2% of a driver's annual salary. Covering a single year of crash losses for the whole state runs an estimated $23.6B, $9B more than next-ranked New Jersey. As in Georgia, failure to yield is the leading factor, behind 20% of deadly collisions.

6 to 10. New Jersey, Texas, Florida, South Carolina, and Colorado

New Jersey drivers face crash costs of $2,043.60 per licensed driver, the fourth-highest figure in our top 10. Texas ranks seventh, with crash costs equal to 3.11% of median earnings. South Carolina follows Florida in ninth place, where failure to yield accounts for 27.5% of reported factors in fatal crashes. Colorado rounds out the list at 70.0. We cover Florida in detail below.

Florida's place on this list comes down to the price of being insured. Florida drivers spend an average of $1,864.63 a year on auto insurance, more than drivers in any other state. Our state also carries $20.0B in total crash costs, the fourth-largest total in the country, spread across more than 17 million licensed drivers.

On a per-driver basis, a crash costs Floridians $1,176.32, or 2.46% of median annual earnings. That is lower than in most top 10 states, but it comes on top of the highest insurance bills in the nation. Florida's no-fault system adds another layer, since injured drivers first turn to their own Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage before they can pursue the at-fault driver.

Careless and inattentive driving is the leading factor in Florida's fatal crashes, at 33.8% of reported factors. We see the results of distracted driving in our own cases, from hit-and-run collisions to crashes that leave drivers with serious injuries.

What Steven L. Frankl Says About Rising Insurance Costs

Steven L. Frankl, principal attorney and partner, commented on the study.

"Average full coverage car insurance rates rose nearly 10% in 2025, reaching $2,697 annually, and that trend is continuing into 2026. Primarily, it's driven by medical inflation, increasing attorney involvement, and rising repair complexity. Georgia drivers are caught in a particularly tight squeeze: a state where crash costs already consume 5% of median earnings, combined with premiums that have risen sharply, means the total cost of being a driver, before anything goes wrong, is increasing faster than wages."
